Flex-ES Systems Programming
Learned and took over the care and feeding of a Flex-ES mainframe, including installing CKD disk packs to UNIX disk slices (using an automated method to improve accuracy and turnaround), mapping UNIX devices to mainframe channel units, bringing up a new mainframe, etc. Also day-to-day maintenance such as installing new version of Flex-ES, using the emulator, etc.
IBM has discontinued the Flex-ES emulator program for independent software vendors. My experience with Flex-ES has helped me considerably with the new VM/CMS solution which replaced it. The VM/CMS system is not an emulator, since it runs on true manframe hardware, but it is a similar host operating system for virtual machine images of z/OS instances. Most of the principles of operation are basically the same as for Flex-ES, including a very similar approach to doing an IPL.
