Web-Based VTOC Report
Created a procedure to put a live VTOC (volume table of contents) report on the SoftBase internal web site. The mainframe component uses the IEHLIST utility to generate LISTVTOC output for each of our mainframe volumes, appending each report to a file, which is then FTPed to a Linux server.
A Perl program parses the IEHLIST output to extract data for each file on each volume, as well as summary data. This information is stored in a MySQL table where it can be used to generate dynamic web pages. Mainframe systems programmers are able to see close to real-time (the report runs each night) information about use of space on volumes, space consumption by user, and which datasets are on which volumes.
(The piece I did not write was the actual web code for displaying the reports, something written by another developer who had an extensive library of code already written to generate these types of reports.)
