Other Skills/InterestsAutomating Windows With Perl (1998)A critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful book, ahead of its time, which discussed using Perl as a "glue" language to automate Windows system administration and tasks. Included code for a portable cron daemon which is now an open source project (cronw.sourceforge.net). Also included early chapter on using OLE Automation with Perl. This book was about five years ahead of its time, and what I wanted to do with this technology wasn't quite possible yet. With the adoption of the .NET CLR runtime, and the targeting of languages like Perl and Python to the CLR, seamless integration with COM servers became trivially easy. I began to concentrate on UNIX and mainframe development actually while the book was being written, and never returned to the Windows world to update it. |
