XMI Backup Solution
For a mainframe that had no physical or fake (i.e. disk file) tape capabilities, wrote an Internet backup and restore solution. On the mainframe, the standard ADRDSSU utility, running in list-only mode, generates lists of files that have changed. The list is processed by a custom REXX program that creates XMI files and FTPs them to an off-site Linux server. On the Linux side, a menu-based utility written in Perl allows users to do their own ad-hoc backups and restore files from any archived backup. The Perl program FTPs the appropriate files and automatically generates and submits the necessary mainframe job streams. For security, the Perl program was designed to be run by sudo in an SSH session and used perlmenu for its user interface.
